Jennie’s Story

April 17, 2021

Jennie’s heart sank and panic set in when Metro Cebu locked down because of the coronavirus pandemic. As a young teen, Jennie was trafficked for sex and it took her years of support from her 10ThousandWindows care team to gain the confidence and workplace skills needed to succeed in the Philippines IT sector.

Her hope crashed in March 2020 as businesses shuttered and the Philippines economy suffered. Jennie lost her job and worried how, without a paycheck, she would feed her daughter. When 10ThousandWindows launched its Covid-19 Crisis Response in April, Jennie accessed emergency funds to buy food for her family.

During those dark days, Jennie’s counselor called her regularly and helped her consider her employment options. When Jennie was offered a different job at her previous company if she’d take additional training and an exam, she hesitated. But with the support of her career counselor, Jennie finished the training and passed the exam. In August, five months after losing her job, Jennie was employed full time and once again able to provide for herself and her daughter with dignity.

“I will grab this opportunity,” Jennie says. “I have enough experience and I am confident that I can handle the job.”

Jenny’s story is featured in our 2020 Annual Report available here.
